Knitting is a way of life

12:33 PM

Now I know it: knitting is a way of life on its own, totally different than sewing.
I've started knitting only some months ago, so I'm a very beginner, but I already knitted a couple of sweaters for my daughter and this dress I'm going to show you today. I'm very proud of it.

Knitting for me means meditation. Time. Patience. While sewing is more fast-foody, dynamic, complex. In knitting, it’s only me, a ball of yarn, and my knitting needles. When I sew, it’s me and a multitude of other things: sewing machine, serger, pattern, fabric, thread, needles, scissors, iron, buttons, zippers…

Fare a maglia per me è come meditare. Serve tempo, e pazienza.

When I take on a new sewing project I feel like I’m going to build a house, because I need to gather all my energy to coordinate a lot of different materials and techniques, but the result is so satisfying! Knitting instead is a sweet break from the daily stress, and needs time. I can sew a dress in an afternoon, if I really feel like it. Knitting project are normally long (and mine are very long, because I’m very slow!) and if something goes wrong you have to undo everything, try not to swear and start over, stitch after stitch. The goal is far away.

Knitting and sewing are my yoga: but while the first clears my mind and prepares me for a future feeling of fulfillment, the second occupies every neuron in my brain and lets me foretaste a closer gratification.

This dress is the Little Sister’s Dress by Tora Froset Design (free on Ravelry), with some alterations: I’ve skipped the opening on the front and added some purled rows to fit my daughter’s measurements (this pattern goes from 3 to 24 months, while my daughter is 3 years old). It’s knitted with circular needles from the top down and shaped with concentric increases at the shoulders. It means: no seams! I only use circular needles because I like to get a seamless, ready-to-wear garment at the end.
The yarn is a beautiful wool purchased locally (55% merino, 12% cachemire, 33% microfiber) in baby pink.

My daughter already knows a lot about sewing and knitting! She knows how a sewing machine works, sometimes I sew with her sitting on my knees, and when she sees me knitting, she always says she wants to help me knitting something for her. Last month we went to my local store to buy some sewing supplies, and there she saw a super soft pink ball of yarn, and decided I had to buy it because she needed “a princess dress”. Well, I’m not so good at knitting to create something like a princess dress, but I hope it’s a step on that direction. At least, it’s pink!

    1. You're right Anna, I should have said that I knit slowly, and not that knitting itself is slow! Your blog is so nice, I should learn to knit from you!

    1. Thank you Rachel! Give knitting a chance, I tried to crochet too but knitting is more versatile. I still prefer sewing, though!

  3. Lovely story! I have the same feeling about sewing and knitting. Two more things I like about knitting: 1. it's a more social activity than sewing. Instead of going up to my sewing room when the kids are asleep, I can sit and knit while they are playing. 2. I like how knitting gives you a close-up view of the thing you are creating. Recently, I was knitting a hat with some multicolored wool and was marvelling at the subtle streaks of color that kept appearing as I went about.

    1. Nice comment Saskia! Sometimes I attend knitting cafés, and really, you can't do the same (chatting and drinking) while sewing. And I would add: 3. Knitting is something you can do while your kids are sleeping next door! My sewing corner is near my daughter's room, so I can't sew during the night!
